Amazon Dropped the Buy Box Gate. Your Metrics Still Matter

4 min read

One of the most misread Amazon changes of 2026: Amazon is removing seller performance as a standalone eligibility requirement for the Featured Offer, commonly called the Buy Box. The US rollout began in early July 2026, with EU and UK following, and global completion expected by the end of the year.

Plenty of sellers read that as permission to stop worrying about their metrics. That reading will cost them. Confirm the current rollout status for your marketplace in Seller Central.

What exactly did Amazon remove?

Amazon removed a single pass-or-fail gate. Previously, an account whose performance dipped below a defined bar was blocked from competing for the Featured Offer across all of its ASINs, regardless of how good its price, prep or delivery speed were on any individual listing.

That blanket lockout is what disappeared. As reported, no seller action is required and no enrolment is needed, since existing offers are included automatically.

Does account health still affect the Buy Box?

Yes, and this is the part sellers are getting wrong. Featured Offer ranking factors are unchanged. Landed price, delivery speed, fulfilment reliability, inventory depth and seller performance all still drive which offer gets selected.

The shift is from a gate to a weighting. Before, weak metrics locked you out entirely. Now weak metrics make you lose the comparison against a stronger competing offer. You are still losing. You are just losing in a way that is harder to see in a dashboard, because there is no eligibility flag telling you what happened.

  • Removed: seller performance as a standalone, account-wide eligibility gate

  • Unchanged: landed price, delivery speed, fulfilment reliability and inventory depth as ranking factors

  • Unchanged: Order Defect Rate, late shipment rate, valid tracking rate and cancellation rate driving account health and marketplace enforcement

  • Unchanged: the risk of suspension for genuine policy violations

  • Required of you: nothing, the change applies automatically

Who actually gains from this change?

The clearest winners are sellers who had one bad stretch, a shipping failure over a holiday period or a supplier problem, and found themselves locked out of the Featured Offer on their entire catalogue while they recovered. That penalty was blunt and slow to unwind.

Newer accounts benefit too. A short performance history no longer keeps you out of the competition entirely while you build a track record.

The quieter consequence: more offers competing on every ASIN. If you were winning partly because weaker sellers were gated out, expect that edge to thin.

What should you do differently now?

  1. Stop treating Buy Box eligibility as a binary you either have or do not have. Track your Featured Offer win rate by ASIN instead

  2. Watch your win percentage on your top revenue ASINs over the coming weeks, since more competitors can now enter the auction

  3. Keep your account health metrics tight. They moved from gate to ranking input, which is a change in mechanism, not in importance

  4. Revisit repricing rules that assumed certain competitors were permanently locked out

  5. Do not relax fulfilment standards. Delivery speed and reliability remain direct ranking factors

Since account health now works as a ranking input rather than an on-off switch, it is worth knowing which metrics carry real weight. Our guide to the Amazon account health dashboard covers the ones that matter.

Losing the Buy Box and cannot see why?

That is the predictable side effect of this change. There is no longer an eligibility flag explaining the loss, so the diagnosis moves to price, delivery promise, inventory depth and account health together. If your Featured Offer share has slipped and the cause is not obvious, book a free account audit and we will work through it with you.

What is the Amazon Featured Offer eligibility gate?

It was a pass-or-fail check that blocked an account from competing for the Featured Offer across its entire catalogue when seller performance metrics fell below a defined bar. Amazon began removing it in July 2026.

Does this mean account health no longer matters for the Buy Box?

No. Seller performance remains a ranking factor in Featured Offer selection. What changed is that poor metrics no longer disqualify you outright, they weaken your position against competing offers instead.

When does the change take effect?

The US rollout began in early July 2026, with EU and UK following, and global completion expected by the end of 2026. Confirm the status for your marketplace in Seller Central.

Do I need to enrol or change my listings?

No. As reported, existing offers are included automatically and no seller action is required. If a service offers to enrol you in this change for a fee, that is a warning sign.

Will more competitors now win the Buy Box on my ASINs?

Possibly. Sellers previously gated out on performance grounds can now compete. Watch your Featured Offer win rate on high-revenue ASINs over the coming weeks rather than assuming your share holds.

Can I still be suspended for poor account health?

Yes. Order Defect Rate, late shipment rate, valid tracking rate and cancellation rate still drive account health and marketplace-level enforcement. Removing the Buy Box gate did not soften suspension policy.

How do I tell why I lost the Featured Offer now?

There is no single eligibility flag to check any more, so work through the ranking inputs together: landed price against competitors, delivery promise, fulfilment reliability, inventory depth and account health.

Should I change my repricing strategy?

Review any rule built on the assumption that specific competitors were locked out, because that assumption may no longer hold. If you would rather not rebuild the logic yourself, AMZ Expert manages pricing strategy as part of full account management.

Summary

Amazon removed the account-wide performance gate on Featured Offer eligibility, not the influence of performance on winning it. Weak metrics used to lock you out; now they simply lose you the comparison, which is harder to spot and just as expensive. Track Featured Offer win rate per ASIN and keep your account health where it was.
